Location: SOUTH AFRICA

Beneficiaries: youth and adults in Western Cape.

Bullying remains a pervasive issue in schools and communities across the globe, affecting the mental health, safety, and well-being of countless young people. In response, creative and community-driven solutions are emerging to challenge harmful behaviors and promote empathy. One such initiative is Puppets Against Bullying, a dynamic project led by Pamela Mary Anthony through Ubuntu Dance Theatre Arts in South Africa. By harnessing the power of puppetry, this initiative is not only raising awareness about the effects of bullying but also creating engaging, educational experiences that inspire positive change among youth and adults alike.

The Project

In the Western Cape of South Africa, a unique and engaging initiative is using the age-old art of puppetry to spark meaningful conversations around bullying prevention. Led by Pamela Mary Anthony and her organization Ubuntu Dance Theatre Arts, the Puppets Against Bullying project brings to life memorable characters, such as “Jo the Production”, to deliver powerful messages about empathy, respect, and kindness. Through captivating puppet shows, the project creates safe and interactive spaces where learners and community members can explore the emotional and social impacts of bullying. With performances staged at venues like the Nelson Mandela Family Youth Centre, this initiative has already reached over 2,000 individuals, empowering both youth and adults to become advocates for change in their communities.

The Impact of the Seed Grant

The support of The Pollination Project played a crucial role in helping Puppets Against Bullying achieve several of its core goals. The grant enabled the project team to expand their outreach, conduct performances across multiple communities, and educate over 2,000 people across various communities in the Western Cape about the harmful effects of bullying and the importance of empathy and respect. It also helped deepen key partnerships with organizations like ASSITEJ SA and the Stand Foundation, which in turn enriched the content and reach of the performances. Beyond the stage, the project became a platform for local artists, puppeteers, and educators to creatively address social issues while engaging young people not just as spectators, but as active participants and future leaders. With TPP’s support, Puppets Against Bullying laid the groundwork for long-term sustainability through community engagement, diversified funding strategies, and thoughtful planning for continued growth.

The Future

Looking ahead, the team at Ubuntu Dance Theatre Arts is preparing to scale the project’s impact even further. Plans are underway to reach more schools and communities, develop educational resources to complement the puppet shows, and train new performers to meet the growing demand. With continued emphasis on impact evaluation and storytelling, Puppets Against Bullying aims to serve as a model for how creativity can be harnessed to tackle complex social issues. Pamela Mary Anthony and her team remain committed to inspiring change, one puppet performance at a time.

The grant not only provided the financial backing we needed but also a sense of validation and encouragement to pursue our mission. The TPP’s commitment to environmental and social causes aligns perfectly with our project’s goals, making this partnership particularly meaningful.
