Beneficiaries: Schools and students
The Project
The Eco Spot Project emerged from a simple yet powerful observation: students learn best when they can see, touch, and actively participate in environmental initiatives. In two private schools, each serving over 2,000 students, Meroline has expanded existing Eco Clubs beyond classroom lectures into vibrant centers of demonstration and advocacy. At the heart of each school now stands an “advocacy spot” paired with a green space – living laboratories where students don’t just learn about environmental conservation, they practice it. Under Denplanet’s weekly guidance, Eco Club members curate information boards with environmental messages, maintaining these spaces as constant reminders of their role as environmental stewards.
The Impact of the Seed Grant
The impact of The Pollination Project’s grant has been transformative, catalyzing a ripple effect throughout the school communities. What began as an ambitious vision has blossomed into a movement, with Eco Club membership swelling to over 528 students who now serve as environmental and climate change ambassadors. The advocacy spots, strategically positioned near green spaces, have become focal points for environmental consciousness, sparking visible behavioral changes throughout the school community. Students, teachers, and administrators alike have embraced sustainable practices, demonstrating how targeted support can ignite meaningful environmental action.
TPP did not only provide financial support for this project but also offered valuable guidance in coming up with this project and its reporting. TPP also took time to understand our goals and their approach and genuine interest in our work made us feel valued and empowered to make real impacts.
The Future
Looking ahead, Meroline envisions the Eco Spot Project as just the beginning of a larger environmental awakening in Cameroon’s educational system. The initiative has established a sustainable framework, with students taking ownership of their green spaces and maintaining the eco-spots with pride. Plans are already in motion to expand the project’s reach, inviting other schools to visit these model sites and implement similar programs. Through strategic partnerships and continued community engagement, Denplanet aims to create a network of environmentally conscious schools across Yaoundé and beyond, nurturing a generation of young leaders committed to environmental stewardship.
