Beneficiaries: people in Ondo town, Ondo state.

Imagine losing your vision without warning – no pain, no obvious symptoms – until it’s too late. This is the devastating reality for millions affected by glaucoma, an insidious disease that slowly robs individuals of their sight. In Nigeria’s Ondo State, where public awareness of glaucoma remains dangerously low, one initiative is changing the narrative. Led by Sodiq Adeniyi, the Glaucoma Awareness Campaign is fighting to prevent blindness by educating communities and ensuring early detection. Thanks to support from The Pollination Project, this movement is making a lasting impact, empowering individuals with knowledge and access to critical eye screenings.

The Project

Glaucoma, often called “The Silent Thief of Sight,” is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, yet public awareness remains dangerously low. In Ondo State, Nigeria, Sodiq Adeniyi launched the Glaucoma Awareness Campaign to change that narrative. With the goal of preventing blindness through early detection and education, the campaign focused on public sensitization and eye screenings. It began with the distribution of 1,000 questionnaires to assess the community’s understanding of glaucoma, revealing an alarming statistic, less than 20% of respondents were aware of the disease. In response, the project conducted extensive awareness activities across churches, mosques, market squares, and homes, educating thousands about glaucoma’s causes, risk factors, and the importance of routine eye examinations. The final phase of the campaign provided free glaucoma screenings for individuals over 40, ensuring that those at risk could begin early management and treatment.

The Impact of the Seed Grant

With financial support from The Pollination Project, the Glaucoma Awareness Campaign expanded its reach and deepened its impact. The grant enabled the distribution of educational materials, including stickers, flyers, and posters, reinforcing the message long after the awareness events concluded. Over 5,000 people benefited from the initiative, while more than 500 individuals underwent eye screenings, leading to the early detection of glaucoma in dozens of cases.

Thanks to the support of The Pollination Project, over 50 individuals received anti-glaucoma medication, potentially saving their sight. The campaign was the first of its kind in the community, setting a precedent for proactive eye health interventions and changing the way people perceive routine eye care.

The Future

Looking ahead, Sodiq Adeniyi envisions a future free from glaucoma-related blindness. His mission extends beyond Ondo State, with plans to expand the project into other regions, reaching more communities in need. By forging partnerships with hospitals, clinics, and like-minded organizations, and seeking additional grants, he aims to amplify the campaign’s impact on a national and even global scale. Through continued advocacy and early detection efforts, this initiative is paving the way toward a future where preventable blindness from glaucoma becomes a thing of the past.

The Pollination Project made some of my aspiration to giving back to my community come to reality. My project, Glaucoma Awareness Campaign is the first line in preventing glaucoma related blindness, because it is known that awareness precedes prevention.
My sincere appreciation to TPP for giving me this opportunity.
