The Project

A handful of tools, the right knowledge, and a reliable buyer can completely change a farmer’s reality. This belief drives “One Farmer One Contract,” a grassroots initiative from the Better Together Indonesia Foundation that equips Arabica coffee farmers with practical support to improve their harvests and incomes. The project focuses on post-harvest training, infrastructure like pulver machines and drying racks, and building contract-based partnerships with local coffee shops. At its core is a commitment to farmer dignity and fair compensation for quality work.

“We don’t want farmers to feel like they’re always at the mercy of fluctuating prices,” said project lead Fuad Andhika Rahman. “This is about giving them back control.”

The Impact of the Seed Grant

With a seed grant from The Pollination Project, the initiative moved from concept to tangible impact. Two women farmers in Sembalun received specialized training, equipment, and support that allowed them to produce and store higher-quality beans. The funds covered two pulver machines, four bamboo drying racks, and storage supplies (50 gunny sacks and 50 hermetic plastic bags).

The grant also made it possible to broker direct sales agreements with local cafés, ensuring stable prices and reliable buyers.

“Before, we didn’t have the tools or the access,” shared one of the farmers. “Now we know how to process our beans better and where to sell them.” The results were not just technical. Trust grew between farmers, local businesses, and the project team, creating a stronger sense of community and shared purpose.

The Future

The vision is expanding. The team plans to include more farmers, refine training to cover advanced and sustainable farming methods, and build new partnerships for funding and distribution. With a clear model and growing interest from surrounding communities, “One Farmer One Contract” is evolving into a localized system that rewards quality, empowers producers, and strengthens economic resilience in Indonesia’s coffee-growing regions.

“This grant didn’t just fund tools, it sparked belief, in us and in the farmers we work with.”
