Shelby Kretz, 1girl

Shelby Kretz, is a recent Ohio State University graduate with a passion for gender equality and educational opportunity. Shelby, along with her partners, Aditi Bansal and Sheila Maina, launched 1girl, a non-profit organization in Columbus, Ohio that inspires low-income middle school girls to become successful leaders through a professional development program and individually designed real-world projects.

“Women are far behind in education and leadership roles”, notes Shelby. “Empowering women leads to stronger economies, healthier families, and more stable societies.”  1girl will encourage both participating girls and college student facilitators to develop skills and experience that will help them become future leaders.

The funds from The Pollination Project will be used to expand 1girl into ten additional cities in 2014: Toledo, Dayton, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Findlay, Akron, Athens, and Kent, Ohio; and Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, Michigan.  To learn more about the 1girl program, check out their website, and follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
