Purity Wanjohi, Mazingira Safi Initiative: Community Based Litter Management System

A group of youth stand together pushing their collected trash.

In May 2015, Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi, was flooded because the drainage systems were clogged with food wrappers, plastic bottles and newspapers amongst other trash. Purity Wanjohi recognizes this not only as an environmental concern, but also as a health risk to the greater community, prompting her to create the Mazingira Safi Initiative: Community Based Litter Management System project, whose vision is, “Clean environment. Communal responsibility.” With a seed grant, Purity and her group have monthly cleanups and reach out to community members who engage in environmental awareness activities and ultimately become environmental ambassadors.
