Kween Culture & Aria Sa’id – Kween Culture Initiative

Date grant awarded: July 20, 2018

Kween Culture Initiative is a Bay Area based non-profit project that produces cultural dialogue and social empowerment events and programming in San Francisco and Oakland, California that is exclusively led, facilitated and by/for transgender women of color. Birthed by San Francisco based public policy & cultural advocate, Aria Sa’id, the project aims to fill a prominent gap in the social and cultural empowerment of transgender women of color.

It is their belief that it is more important now more than ever for trans and gender nonconforming people to be the architects of their own narratives. While trans visibility is at an all-time high, with trans people increasingly represented in popular culture, violence against them has also never been higher. Kween Culture Initiative celebrates in the deep profundity of Black and Brown transgender women of color’s cultural enrichment, social empowerment, and social justice.
