Date grant awarded: 4/15/2017

Joseph Osuigwe Chidiebere, the Executive Director/Founder of Devatop Centre for Africa Development created Project End Female Genital Mutilation (Project End FGM) to reduce by 50% the incidence of FGM in Kuje Area Council, Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria.

Project End FGM is aimed at fostering community awareness and action by training 100 community leaders, volunteers, midwives/nurses, and youth as End FGM Advocates. The 100 End FGM Advocates are equipped to reach out to 1000 families and engage them in preventing female genital mutilation. The project will use locally-led and culturally relevant communication methods to generate discussion and dialogue- inspiring traditionalists, mutilation practitioners, individuals and communities to question and adjust their own beliefs.

The project works with grassroots networks, traditional rulers, women, youth and decision makers to foster community awareness and action. The project will be executed in partnership with National Human Rights Commission, National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, and Fhi 360. Devatop Centre for Africa Development(DCAD) is a Nigerian youth-based organization that is focused on combating human trafficking, gender-based violence, female genital mutilation & other related human rights abuses; and providing educational support to vulnerable children.
