Joan Kanja, Vane Moraa – Solar radios for educating marginalized communities
The purpose of the Fly Sister Fly Foundation and the “Solar radios for educating marginalized communities project” is to advocate for marginalized communities and promote girls’ education in Northern Kenya. The girls in these communities are often subjected to retrogressive cultural practices such as female genital mutilation and early marriages. As a result, girls do not get educated. This project aims to create awareness of educational topics to these communities. Through this project girls will be exposed to information, which will result in a more enlightened and educated community. The project will use solar powered radios because 90% of these regions do not have an access to electricity. The radio includes a LED light, which can be used at night for studies by the children.
