Dr. Christi-Nevada Winrow and Taylor-Symon Winrow, Founders of BGDF – STREAMS
A mother and daughter team, Nevada Winrow and Taylor Winrow, founded Black Girls Dive Foundation (BGDF) and began the STREAMS program in Baltimore Maryland. STREAMS was created to address the lack of Black women entering the aquatic sciences in hopes of igniting an interest in a field so infrequently considered as a career option for Black women.
STREAMS is an innovative aquatic-based STEM program for girls who are historically underserved and underrepresented in STEM. This program integrates Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics with Scuba and Scientific Diving. Girls learn to build underwater remotely operated vehicles with recording capabilities (ROVR), scuba dive and learning about scientific diving, and use their ROVR and explore and study diverse marine ecosystems. The STREAMS program was recently recognized by their local government with an Executive Citation from their County Executive, Kevin Kamenetz, for their outstanding contribution to their community.
