LET’S
TALK
PERIOD

Amidst the breathtaking landscapes of Nepal, Anupa embarked on a life-changing journey, one that would unearth a deeply concerning tradition known as Chhaupadi. This archaic practice, deeply rooted in local culture, subjected women and girls to a haunting ordeal during their menstruation—banished to cowsheds, they endured isolation, fear, and anxiety, deemed untouchable until the seventh day of their cycle. It was a stark revelation that exposed the dire need for menstrual hygiene awareness.

In this remote corner of the world, a lack of knowledge, intertwined with entrenched societal taboos, had long stifled women’s ability to express their needs and address health problems stemming from poor menstrual hygiene. Anupa, with unwavering determination, stood at the forefront of change, recognizing that promoting proper menstrual hygiene was not just essential but a path to reclaiming the well-being, education, and dignity of girls and women.

Anupa and her dedicated team embarked on a visionary mission, crafting a project that would empower adolescent girls and women with the knowledge and skills needed to manage menstrual hygiene with confidence and grace. Their focus was set on the vibrant Kathmandu district, where the winds of change were ready to sweep through.

The project’s envisioned outcomes were nothing short of transformative:

  • Approximately 1,500 students, both boys and girls, would not only gain awareness but also embrace the understanding that periods and puberty are natural biological processes, not subjects of shame or taboo.
  • Schools would become bastions of change, with students, teachers, and school management teams actively practicing effective menstrual hygiene management, erasing the stigma that once surrounded this vital aspect of women’s lives.
  • The “Let’s Talk Period” club, a beacon of empowerment, would rise within schools, boasting six committee members from grades VII to IX. Their mission? To inform, educate, and provide information on eco-friendly sanitary pads, ensuring accessibility for all who needed them.

This story of Anupa’s passion, determination, and unwavering commitment to transforming lives underscores the power of individuals and their ability to bring about meaningful change. Against all odds, in a far-flung corner of Nepal, hope blossomed, and the winds of change began to stir, promising a brighter, more dignified future for women and girls.
