Zachary’s Playground, started by Deborah Severin, is an inclusive play area located at Vaughan Elementary in Powder Springs, GA which works to encourage social integration.
Vaughan Elementary has nearly 800 students enrolled from preschool through 5th grade. By developing an inclusive play area, children are able to develop a sense of value for others. They provided the space to mature their skills and attitudes, which will benefit them as adults living in a culturally diverse and enriched community.
An inclusive play facility also creates a non-threatening environment that nurtures acceptances, and develops a greater understanding one’s likes and dislikes. Zachary’s Playground is accessible to students with disabilities, allowing children of different skills and abilities to communicate and learn about one another in a safe environment.
“It is paradoxical that many educators and parents still differentiate between a time for learning and a time for play without seeing the vital connection between them.” Leo F. Buscaglia
