Ruth Mirembe, Mabilizi Centre For Economic Development
After watching young women in her community drop out of school due to financial pressures, Ruth Mirembe decided to take action. For many young women in rural Uganda, education is not an option that they can easily pursue. Many young women end up being forced into marriage. Others run away to avoid arranged marriages and end up having to fend for themselves, often while raising young children by themselves.
As someone skilled in crafts and hair-plaiting, Ruth felt that she had the opportunity to help young people avoid these situations. East Africa Team Member Fred Batle met Ruth when she came to train members of his project in Kampala. When he learned more about her work and her long-term desire to open up a community school providing vocational skills, he decided to award her a flow fund in support of her work.
