Date grant awarded: May 27, 2016

Off the Sideline was founded by Leslie Mestman as a way to help low-income children participate in team sports. The Portland, Oregon-based organization provides financial scholarships that enable children to enroll in community sports programs that they otherwise could not afford. Research shows kids who play team sports typically are healthier and fitter than those who don’t. Team sports also provides children access to positive role models, community engagement and the concepts of humility and grace in victory and defeat.Team sports also foster leadership and collaboration skills. We believe all children should have the opportunity to get in the game.
