Lee Mackenzie and Diane Odegard, Austin Bat Refuge

Date grant awarded: December 25, 2016

Since 2011, Lee Mackenzie and Diane Odegard have cared for over 687 bats in Austin, Texas with an 80% success rate if they survive the first day and a 50% release rate back into the wild. Their project, Austin Bat Refuge, will continue to raise orphaned bats and release them back into the wild alongside showcasing their intrinsic value and beauty within the social media world. Combined with teaching opportunities, the project will empower local student volunteers who intern at the center to further their science and veterinary careers, thus enhancing the ever-widening circle of compassion for the misunderstood and mistreated.
