Kemi Akinola – Brixton People’s Kitchen

Date grant awarded: 09/30/2017

Brixton People’s Kitchen (BPK) is an innovative project bringing cooking and kitchen skills into the community. BPK is run by Kemi Akinola, Sheetal Kumar and Zoe Hunn, based in the heart of Brixton, London, an area of diverse cultures and range of socio-economic issues such as hunger, poverty and mental ill health. By cycling their kitchen bike into areas where coming together may not be the norm or even possible, BPK creates a community space and unifies local people regardless of background. Surplus food is transformed into delicious hot meals, with the support of volunteers and with an all inclusive ethos, BPK brings all the People together. By creating connections between people, each BPK meal builds a more cohesive society that develops understanding and tolerance transcending generations, religions and cultures. This grant will enable them to deliver cooking lessons to those lacking in these basic skills.
