Kathy Mackenzie, The SAORI Project

Date grant awarded: September 12, 2016

Individuals who suffer from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s along with those on the Autism spectrum with neurological disorders are often isolated due to the difficulty of communication, often resulting in stress and suffering. Kathy Mackenzie has thus created The SAORI Project in Long Beach, New York whereby weaving fosters a sense of independence through a free-style, no-mistakes approach. It has been said that with use the SAORI becomes invisible, allowing artists to get lost in a sensory experience of beautiful colors, complex textures and soothing sounds.
