Isaac Gogo, Linda Mtoto (Save a Child)
Isaac Gogo is a 29 year old graduate from the University of Nairobi with a passion for public health. In the last 3 years, Isaac has been involved in a number of different community service and development projects throughout Kenya. In his newest project, Linda Mtoto (Save a Child), Isaac is working with Josephine Auma to tackle high rates of maternal and infant mortality in rural Kenya.
Current reports from Kenya’s Ministry of Health show that more than 162,000 women die every year during childbirth due to a lack of basic medical services. Additionally, unsafe birthing practices in rural areas have resulted in the deaths of more than 1.3 million infants from preventable diseases contracted in the first month of a child’s life.
Isaac and Josephine’s Linda Mtoto project will help to address maternal and infant mortality by providing expectant mothers with SMS messages containing personalized information about prenatal care, nutrition, childhood health and disease, and medical appointment reminders. Additionally, over the next 12 months Isaac and Josephine will train more than 50 midwives in safe birthing practices and basic childcare services.
