Julian Awino – Energy Briquette Production

Date grant awarded: 11/15/2017

Energy Briquette Production is a venture that manufactures fuel briquettes, a clean and affordable alternative cooking fuel from urban organic wastes. The briquettes are sold to over 500 households in the slums of Nairobi City, Kenya. The venture was started by Julian Awino, with a women’s group that organizes informal solid waste collection to recycle into fuel briquettes that can be substituted for charcoal for cooking.

About 5 million households in Kenya use charcoal and wood as fuel. Many of these households lack clean and affordable fuel for cooking. On the other hand, cities like Nairobi generate 4 tonnes of organic waste that can be turned into clean and affordable fuel.
