Destiny Shapers CBO – Empowering a Generation Through Education

Date grant awarded: 09/27/2017

Four years ago, Esther Munene saw immense potential among children who were not attending school in the Korogocho slums due to parents’ inability to pay school fees. Together with Lilian Kamigwi, she founded Destiny Shapers CBO, a school project to change lives of orphans and vulnerable children – as well as empower their parents – in Nairobi, Kenya.

Their programs include skill trainings, feeding programs and economic empowerment. They have identified a need to reach out to the whole family using the children as the entry point. Over 60 parents have gone through counseling and 9 women from the community have received employment opportunities.

When the school first started, Destiny Shapers CBO was serving 23 pupils. They now serve 150 children, ages 3-9, who have never attended any other school. The children speak English and have been demonstrated to have high self esteem as a result of being enrolled in the school. The school has been rated the best and the cleanest in the constituency. With the Pollination Project Grant, Esther plans to bring quality mathematics and Information Communication Technology ICT education to the children.
