David Silver, Detroit Horse Power’s 2016 Horseback Riding Summer Camp

Date grant awarded: March 15, 2016

Detroit Horse Power, founded by David Silver, teaches at-risk urban youth valuable skills through riding and caring for horses. As an elementary school teacher in Detroit, David saw a great need for more safe and enriching spaces outside of school that give kids skills that set them up for future success. He also reflected on his experience as a competitive horseback rider and ways horses instill confidence, responsibility, empathy, perseverance, and more. Detroit Horse Power was founded with the goal of building a new urban equestrian center in the city of Detroit that will combine this high-impact youth development programming with the opportunity to turn the burden of Detroit’s vacant land into a community asset. As Detroit Horse Power moves closer to city approval, funding from the Pollination Project is critical to further demonstrating the interest and impact of our program model with pilot programs that bring youth from the city to existing horse barns in the metro-Detroit region for five-day horseback riding summer camps.
