Brayan Cruz, Native Seed Bank

Date grant awarded: December 3, 2016

Two-thirds of students at the University of California, Riverside lackfood security and the whole city experiences some degree of food poverty. After observing this need to increase accessibility of healthy foods, Brayan Cruz has started the Native Seed Bank project to preserve and conserve seeds in the region to promote the revitalization of culture and tradition. The project will store seasonal, heirloom, herb and heritage seeds in the Native American Student Center, allowing for proper care. The project will also give the community the tools, space and educational resources needed to grow the seeds themselves.
