Actos in the Community, Gilbert Vasquez – No to Monster Corn
No to Monster Corn Project aims to honor the voices of indigenous ancestors’ stories and the spirit of La Madre Tierra. The project uses the power of student stories and teatro to educate on environmental and food justice programs, for a sustainable, resilient, respectful and equitable world. Through this project youth, educators, parents, and community members learn about the maiz creation stories, the sacred nature of corn, and the abomination that is genetically modified monster corn; and how it pertains to health, socio-cultural and ancestral connections, social justice, and real-world relevance – by publishing and performing stories that connect to Mexica and Maya ancestry. This projects helps students to connect to their ancestral knowledge in hopes for a better future for themselves and their mother, Mother Earth.
