School Nutrition Garden at Walanga Primary School

Waiswa Cyprian

Waiswa Cyprian is a social worker at Nsette Foundation Uganda, a community volunteer, and a youth sports leader in Walanga village. Through his work with children, he has seen firsthand how hunger weakens concentration, health, and the motivation to stay in school. Deeply committed to Walanga Primary School and its families, he designed a hands-on nutrition garden where students grow their own vegetables and learn skills they can carry home. Waiswa personally coordinates all project activities, manages the grant funds transparently, and documents progress, working alongside school leaders, parents, and district agricultural experts.

  • More than 70 children at Walanga Primary School are creating a school nutrition garden, growing organic vegetables for their own school meals.
  • Fresh vegetables will reach school meals at least twice a week, adding the vitamins currently missing from children’s diets and supporting better concentration and fewer illnesses.
  • Students gain hands-on skills in organic food growing, water-wise farming, and environmental care, guided by agricultural officer Mukose Daniel, who volunteers at a reduced stipend and teaches in Lusoga.
  • Take-home seeds will help at least 40 families start home gardens, improving nutrition for younger siblings and parents while saving money at the market.
  • Head Teacher Edmond Mulondo allocated the plot, the School Management Committee and Parent-Teacher Association contribute voluntary labour for fencing and clearing, and the Bugweri District Agricultural Extension Office will offer technical advice during two visits.

Waiswa Cyprian is helping children at Walanga Primary School in Bugweri District, Uganda, grow the food that fuels their learning. With TPP support, more than 70 students are building a school nutrition garden that will bring fresh vegetables to school meals at least twice a week, while gaining practical skills in chemical-free, organic farming. As children carry seeds and knowledge home, at least 40 families are expected to start their own gardens, extending better nutrition beyond the classroom. Backed by the head teacher, parents, and district agricultural experts, the garden is helping plant the seeds of healthier children, stronger families, and a more resilient community.
