Vasanthi Kumar, Compassionate Classrooms Rajasthan
Vasanthi Kumar is the co-founder of STRAW India, a New Delhi, India-based organization that strives to plant a seed of empathy for people, compassion towards animals, and a respect for the environment through educational programs in schools and by contributing related contents to school textbooks and teacher training manuals.
Now, STRAW India, through its “Compassionate Classrooms” project is attempting to introduce humane education contents into the curriculum of each of the 35 state educational boards in India. Since thousands of schools are affiliated to each of these boards, the reach and impact of these messages of compassion would be widespread and effective.
STRAW India has already succeeded in introducing humane education contents at the Central Board of Secondary Education to which 10,000 schools are currently affiliated in India and abroad. With the help of the Pollination Project’s first grant, the organization has completed their first round of content contribution to text books brought out by the Educational Board of Karnataka. Now, Vasanthi and her team will continue to take the project, “Compassionate Classrooms,” to the Indian state of Rajasthan.
