Stephen Muchoki Kimani, Sports With A Mission
East Africa Hub Fellow Miriam Wambui is an Information & Computer Technology trainer and advocate for young women who wish to enter the field. After meeting Stephen Muchoki Kimani, she found that they shared the same vision of empowering young women and girls from informal settlements (which some people call “slums”), and was excited to see him using sport to do so.
Sports With A Mission (SWAM) is a community based organization in Nairobi, Kenya, that works towards empowering underprivileged young women and girls through sports. This is accomplished through their health, education and sports program activities. For example, football is used as a tool to mobilize young women and girls, empowering and creating opportunities for them while creating a safe space for them to interact, share and learn from each other. The project works in partnership with primary and secondary schools, and so far has been able to reach four hundred and sixty girls with information on HIV/AIDS and reproductive health through peer to peer education. Nathan works to identify young people who are skilled and passionate in sports and gives them a platform to exercise and be good at it. The overall goal for the organization is to promote health and education through sports.
With their Flow Fund, the organization will be able to purchase sports equipment to enable them conduct more life skills sessions to their participants, as well as host a sports tournament.
