Srishti Lakhera, Once Upon a Village

Srishti Lakhera, Once Upon a Village

Srishti Lakhera is an independent filmmaker. After visiting her extended family’s village in Northern India and finding the area nearly deserted, she decided to use her skills in order to tell the stories of people affected by wide-scale immigration.

“Ek tha Gaon” (Once upon a Village) is a documentary film about the ghost villages of Uttarakhand, a State in the Indian Himalayas. For the past few decades, Uttarakhand has been physically and culturally devastated by the wide-scale out-migration of young villagers and their families in search of economic advancement in India’s thriving cities.

Through her film, Srishti will illustrate the effects of out-migration on local systems of food production, water procurement, and even the maintenance of traditional knowledge forms by chronicling the stories of people who have chosen to remain in the area. More importantly, Srishti hopes the film will create awareness and dialogue about the hardships of those left behind among recent immigrants to India’s urban areas.
