Shira Maltz, CPMA Garden and Living LaboratoryShare This:
Shira Maltz, now in her 16th year of being an educator, found herself looking for a way to renew her love for teaching and science stating, “as silly as this sounds, I aspire to be like Ms. Frizzle (from “The Magic School Bus”) and teach students to take chances, make mistakes, and get messy!”
Shira wants students out of their seats, asking questions and having fun with learning. She wants them to be invested in the school, community, and their future and to realize the bigger picture of the universe and how every one of their actions affects every part of the world. With all of that in mind, Shira has designed a project to reinvent the science classroom by building an Aquaponics garden in her classroom at a Middle School in San Diego, The CPMA Garden and Living Laboratory.
Working with fellow teachers and community volunteers, Shira is also in the process of creating a plan to bring the school garden back to life, a garden that has experienced little success in the past due to the locals taking the food. This Grant will help Shira purchase aquarium supplies such as tanks, filters and pumps and garden supplies such as gloves, shovels and rakes.
