Sharitah Nakimuli – I Am a Girl
“I am a girl” is a nonprofit project in Jinja, Uganda that empowers young girls with financial literacy and menstrual hygiene. Many girls drop out of school due to lack of proper sanitation during their menstruation. As a result, they start feeling less capable because they can no longer pursue their studies. This cycle has resulted in increased teenage labor deaths and an increase in the number of uneducated women.
This project aims to change this through one conversation, one form of outreach, and one menstrual kit at a time. Girls are taught how to make their own reusable pads while learning skills that help them earn money to support their education.
