Thomas Salgado and Ernestina Smith, Santa Rosa Cultural Garden
Our project is aimed to install a cultural garden on our Reservation, the Santa Rosa Band of Cahuilla Indians. Our Reservation is located in the San Jacinto/Santa Rosa Mountains in Southern California and we are extremely rural and isolated.
Installing a cultural garden on our Reservation will serve our entire community and it will provide us with an area to gather and discuss culture and heritage, to learn about the native plants in the cultural garden and to help ensure that this knowledge is passed down and not lost.
We started this project because a lot of our youth lack the knowledge of our culture and our native plants, and there is not an area to gather and discuss these important values.
