Patrick Ouma Agolla, Save our Climate
Patrick Ouma Agolla created Save our Climate, an integrated approach to environmental sustainability and community development in the heart of Bukhayo Central, Kenya.
Over the past 50 years, more than 90% of the forest cover in and around Bukhayo Central has been removed for use as fuel, drastically reducing natural ground cover water catchment processes, and contributing to regional drought. In a country facing economic collapse and high rates of unemployment, the effects of these devastating ecological changes have been detrimental for the impoverished communities living in the area.
Through Save Our Climate, Patrick will work collaboratively with government officials and agriculturalists to train local youth in the establishment of five tree nurseries for indigenous, exotic, and fruit tree species. Thereafter, participants will plant over 250,000 tree seedlings in communities and schools throughout the area.
In order to combat future deforestation and local poverty, participants will be given instruction on how to run and manage nature-based enterprises. Additionally, Patrick will provide volunteers with the materials they need to start their own businesses selling affordable biomass briquettes, solar lamps, and energy saving stoves throughout their communities.
