NYALRE WOMEN – Nyalre Project
Women, especially widows living in poverty, suffer silently in the rural villages of Siaya, Kenya. Because of desperation and suffering, women end up being inherited by their husband’s relatives, leading to HIV/AIDS infections, as well as the spread of deadly diseases from one generation to the next. Women are trapped in this cultural setup because they feel like they are unable to raise their children on their own due to poverty.
Beatrice Okatch’s Nyalre project empowers these women with tailoring skills to enable them to start their businesses and be sustainable so that they can dismantle the cultural pressures that prevent rural women from living dignified lives in Hawinga, Siaya, Kenya.
