Nikhil Sharma and FLASTEM team

Date grant awarded: 1/4/2017

The efforts to close the diversity gaps in education and workforce seems to not be working as recent statistics shows that only 1% Hispanic women are working in computing jobs. In Saint Petersburg, Florida, Nikhil Sharma and fellow high school students have established FLASTEM, with support from Pinellas County Schools STEM Program and Pinellas Education Foundation. FLASTEM allows high school students to share best practices about robotics and computer science with underserved elementary and middle school minority students. FLASTEM hosts hands-on workshops, boot camps and do-it-yourself sessions using an informal approach to learning focused on collaboration.
