Mayan communities of Pacutama and Chuicutama, Food Security for Landless Rural Communities

Allison Havens

The Mayan communities of Pacutama and Chuicutama, with support from Allison Havens, Yabal Handicrafts, and Cafe Consciencia, will be using the seed grant from the Pollination Project to create permaculture vegetable gardens and start an oyster mushroom growing project for 50 families. These communities are located in the rural highlands in Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan, Guatemala and suffer from joblessness, malnutrition, and other difficulties due to job scarcity and the lack of farmland in order to cultivate their own food. These two projects focused on food security will allow these families to take advantage of the limited space around their homes in order to grow extra food and earn extra income for their families.
