Max Airborne, Lightning Bolt Community Safety for Small Businesses

Date grant awarded: 06/04/2017

Lightning Bolt Collective founders Katie Loncke, Max Airborne and Hasmik Geghamyan are organizing for greater community safety in Oakland, California. Their project, Lightning Bolt Community Safety for Small Businesses, is bringing together community safety organizations with small business workers and owners to train in skills that bring greater safety to the community: training on interactions with ICE, de-escalation and alternatives to calling the police, basic medic training for treating wounds and tear gas, advocacy for gender-neutral restrooms, and maximizing accessibility beyond the ADA to advance Disability Justice. The first training cohort on May 9 includes trainers: People’s Community Medics, Oakland Power Projects, Sins Invalid, Instituto Familiar, and Transgender & Intersex Justice Project; and businesses: Reem’s Arab Bakery, Cafe Gabriela, Red Bay Coffee, Akat Cafe Kalli, and Miss Ollie’s Restaurant.
