Masereka Solomon, Improving the Learning Potential of Children in Primary School
Masereka Solomon is dedicated to improving the welfare of children at the Kasese Humanist Primary School in Kasese, Uganda.
Many of the students in attendance at the Kasese Humanist School come from poor families who struggle to provide food for their children, leading to high levels of malnourishment, stress, and poor academic performance.
With the help of several colleagues at the Kasese Freethinkers Club, Masereka’s project, Improving the Learning Potential of Children in Primary School, is teaching students and their families about good nutrition, healthy lifestyle practices, environmental sustainability, and self-sufficiency through gardening.
Over the next 12 months, Masereka will organize students and teachers to build a series of vegetable gardens at the school. Students will be allowed to use produce from the gardens at home in order to educate their families about nutrition and gardening. Additionally, the project will provide students with valuable knowledge that they can use to start their own gardens either at home or in the broader community.
