Lum Julliet, the Green Community Program
Lum Julliet is a first year student at the University of Buea in Cameroon who is passionate about environmental conservation. Through her project, the Green Community Program (GCP), Lum is promoting sustainable development in rural communities near Mount Cameroon National Park.
In the last several decades the forests of Cameroon have suffered from incredible rates of environmental devastation due to rising population pressures. Unsustainable agricultural practices have resulted in an annual loss of nearly 10 million acres of forest combined with wide-spread soil degradation, and nowhere are the effects more pronounced than Mount Cameroon National Park.
Through the Green Community Program in Bomaka, Cameroon, Lum is alerting residents to the pressing environmental issues that their country currently faces. Lum’s campaign will involve educational outreach to 10 local schools where she will provide students with environmental and nutritional education, as well as teaching them to cultivate fruit trees at their school’s campus. Additionally, working in collaboration with traditional councils, Lum is organizing a reforestation campaign in three local villages with more than 2000 participants.
