Leigh Davis, Vigil

Date grant awarded: September 23, 2016

Leigh Davis’ Vigil is a site-based installation exploring the power of loss and remembrance through a unique auditory experience. Ignited by her work with a community of women continuing the tradition of bedside singing to the dying, the artist-designed environment allows participants to embody a dying person, rewriting the narrative surrounding death and emphasizing the beauty and peace inherent to this experience that is often sterilized by hospitals and silenced by cultural taboo. Designed as a public project, Vigil and its related events target the local population in an attempt to examine the ways in which death can reaffirm community bonds while also providing space for individual reflection. Vigil opens for the first time at Clermont State Historic Site, NY in fall 2016.
