Kansiime Honest Fortunate, Girls to Lead Africa
Kansiime Honest Fortunate is the founder of Girls to Lead Africa, a project that incubates, nurtures, grooms, and develops female leaders and policymakers in schools in the Kanungu District of Uganda.
Contemporary Ugandan society is filled with negative stereotypes of women. Although educational institutions are trying to dispel many of these stereotypes by placing female students in leadership roles, many young women are so deeply affected by widespread cultural biases that they refuse leadership positions because they doubt their own abilities.
Kansiime’s program empowers young women by challenging them to think critically about their gender, their identity, and their roles in their communities while deconstructing negative images of women in Ugandan society. Perhaps more importantly, Girls to Lead Africa teaches young women lobbying skills they can use to improve the lives of other female students in schools throughout Uganda.
During 2015 and 2016 Kansiime will hold student empowerment workshops, anti-discrimination school policy development sessions and debates, and inter-school exchanges for young women at schools throughout Kanungu. Additionally, Kansiime will organize a Girls to Lead Africa alumni network that will support graduates pursuing roles as community leaders.
