Justus Mulwa, the Gizzim Photography and Talent Search Initiative
Justus Mulwa is an award-winning photographer, actor, choreographer, and the founder of Gizzim Citizen Journalist, an initiative that is helping children in Githurai, Kenya find inspiration and empowerment through the lens of a camera.
Githurai is one of the largest slums on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, boasting more than 800,000 residents and one of the highest crime rates in the area. Many of the children who live in Githurai come from impoverished families with histories of drug abuse, HIV/AIDS, criminal activities, and prostitution. With few positive influences or expressive outlets, many of Githurai’s children face a life of desperation with little hope for improving their lives.
Through Gizzim’s newest project, the Gizzim Photography and Talent Search Initiative, Justus will provide talented local youth with cameras, photographic training, and the opportunity to showcase their abilities at photo exhibits, concerts, gymnastics competitions, and international news outlets. The project will also empower Githruai’s youth by providing them with new opportunities to inform and educate the public about life in Githurai through the entertaining mediums of photography and performance.
