Date grant awarded: April 2, 2018

Grantee Name: Julia Shivers and Chiara Eisner
Project Name: OncArt Inc
Grant Location: Boston, Massachusetts, USA

Project Description: OncArt Inc. is a not-for-profit organization based in Boston, Massachusetts, that connects clinicians with artists to produce illustrated health education materials worldwide—“Art for Health Literacy, Everywhere.” OncArt materials are designed especially for people in low-resource regions where advanced stages of disease are high, literacy levels are low, and clinicians do not speak the same language as their patients. OncArt’s responsive web application https://oncart.org offers both a unique collaborative design tool and a free library of OncArtworks that can be downloaded to print or transferred electronically.

Built on collaboration, OncArt receives topics submitted by clinicians and then partners with the local clinician and a local artist to produce new site-specific health information that is not only culturally relevant but also medically accurate. The objective for each health message is to address taboos and misinformation with familiar images and plain-speech captions in the actual languages of the communities that the materials are designed for. OncArt’s upcoming suite of health topics includes immigrant health rights, opioid use disorder, type 2 diabetes, cervical cancer prevention, family planning myths and facts, and hypertension, to be deployed in Uganda, Haiti, and the Boston area.

Founded in 2016 by Chiara Eisner and Julia Shivers, OncArt Inc. invites everyone to visit https://OncArt.org to contribute new health messages, translate existing messages, illustrate health messages, and share archived messages by mobile phone–join OncArt to raise health awareness around the world!
