Jessica London-Shields and Meredith Mongtomery, She Crew (Spring Impact Grant 2015)

Jessica and Meredith are dedicated to encouraging positive self image for young women.

The team originally received a TPP seed grant for their program She Crew, a multi-disciplinary journaling workshop where they utilize their writing and performing skills to cultivate the talent and positive self image of girls in Chicago.

Initially a six-week summertime program, She Crew  investigates the question of what it is to be a woman, what womanhood is, and how women see themselves in relation to it. Participants discuss questions and write on topics such as womanhood and identity, women in relation to family and community, career, and the physical body. At the end of the workshop, the students put on a performance that they write themselves.

Since being funded, She Crew is now an officially registered 501(c)(3) organization and has solidified a partnership with the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, where they will be holding their 2015 Summer Intensive. They have also expanded to provide after-school programming at Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center and Melody STEM School in Chicago’s Garfield Park.  In addition, they have begun providing single-day workshops during the school year for Chicago Public Schools.

She Crew will receive a $2,500 Impact Grant to support the costs of the 2015 Summer Program.
