Darline Turner – Healing Hands Community Doula Project

Date grant awarded: 02/06/2018

The Healing Hands Community Doula Project aims to create awareness of the negative birth outcome disparities (high rates of preterm birth and low birth weight infants) that exists between Texas’ Black women and women of other cultures and ethnicities, and to eliminate the high rates of maternal and infant mortality in Black women and infants in Texas. This project provides an enhanced perinatal care program utilizing full spectrum Black doulas to support Black childbearing women from conception through the first year of their child’s life. Through the recommendations of the World Health Organization, the project utilizes leading research on perinatal morbidity and mortality and the wisdom of colleagues to address maternal and infant mortality globally. The project strives to fill a much needed gap in maternity care for Texas’ Black childbearing women.
