Freeman Word, The Zakatu Madrasa

Date grant awarded: 04/28/2017

Founded by poet Freeman Word, the Zakatu Madrasa is a planned spiritual subscription bookstore and private library. With an organized cohort of twenty-five artists, activists, and educators, the Madrasa uses an unconventional cooperative remuneration scheme to implement innovative community-based artistic programming.

This project will spotlight regional youth, providing mentoring services, as well as leadership opportunities for interested young people. The Zakatu Madrasa represents a radical educational alternative to the prevalent outlook on culture, art, and history.
