There is a healthcare crisis in America, especially among transgender people, with 41% attempting suicide, 28% avoiding healthcare services, 28% reporting cases of harassment during medical visits and 19% being refused care due to their identity. Elliot Kale Edmiston and Lauren Mitchell have established The Trans Buddy Program, an advocacy project based out of Nashville, Tennessee that pairs trained advocates with transgender people seeking services related to their health and wellbeing. The project provides trans-competent healthcare referrals, in-person support to clients and staff as well as trainings for clinical staff.
