Project Description: The “Semillas Con Semillas: School Gardening and Seed Saving Program project” is a school gardening project that aims to grow traditional and heirloom seeds with youth. This project will promote cultural preservation, awareness, nutrition and health. Through this project, a conscious effort will be made to source from vendors who are advocates for land restoration and seed preservation. In the process of growing native seeds and utilizing traditional gardening practices, students will be able to benefit from food grown in the garden.

This project will provide an important contribution for child growth development. These seeds are important not only for the nutrition that it may bring to the children, but also for the overall nature of promoting regionally adapted plants with cultural significance. This project will also organize a seed exchange with the support of the Riverside Community Garden Council. The seed exchange will be composed of California Native plants, heirlooms, and traditional seeds form the Southwest and parts of Mexico. The seed exchange will be open to the public and hosted at one of the many community gardens in Riverside. The seeds, plants, and resources at the seed exchange will go directly to the community in order to promote the use of native plants in local gardens. The remaining resources will be shared and stored in the Riverside Community Garden’s new seed library.
