Duron Chavis, McDonough Community Garden Sustainable Energy Project
Duron Chavis is a community activist who works to promote health and wellness in at risk communities. He is the founder of McDonough Community Garden, an 8500 square foot community garden located in a census tract in Richmond Virginia that the USDA has designated as a food desert.
The year-old garden has 27 raised beds growing food and increasing healthy food access for the community. They have a community of gardeners that coordinate workshops for youth and adults on environmental awareness and the benefits of urban agriculture.
The McDonough Community Garden is an off grid site without any access to a water line or electricity. As a result their efforts to efficiently irrigate the garden are limited to gravity fed drip irrigation. The Pollination Project funds will support the installation of two Aquabarrel Turborain Solar Powered water pumps that will allow them to irrigate the garden in a more efficient and sustainable way.
