Denise Ray – Somebody I Love is in Jail – A Look at Life Behind Bars

Date grant awarded: August 6, 2018

Denise Ray is the founder of the project, “Somebody I Love is in Jail.” “Somebody I Love is in Jail” is a book designed to help children who have a parent that is incarcerated. The book contains pictures of actual U.S. detention facilities so even the youngest child can see where mommy and/or daddy eat and sleep, as well as what they wear. When a parent is removed from the home due to an arrest, a child often becomes curious and concerned about their parent’s well-being. They struggle to focus on school, friends, and even themselves.

“Somebody I Love is in Jail” explains daily life in a jail and/or prison so that a child can rest assured their parent is clothed, fed, and taken care of when sick. By reading this book (or having it read to them), a child can get back to focusing on academics, friends, and fun. Isabelle’s Book Club, Inc. volunteer Denise Ray took questions asked by children, found answers, and compiled them into a book so others can have their questions answered as well. Proceeds from the sales of this book will go towards creating more books.
