Denise Marcella, Classroom Canines for Kindness
“Classroom Canines for Kindness” is an outgrowth of the volunteer work Denise Marcella and her therapy dog, Kodiak, provided following the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in CT. Having seen the remarkable benefits a dog can provide that transcends crisis support, “Classroom Canines” evolved. Employing teams of registered therapy dogs and their handlers “Classroom Canines for Kindness” is a ten-week in-school or after-school program for Grades K-8. Children are guided to an awareness of the needs and behaviors of therapy dogs that can be applied to a greater understanding of the similarities that exist within themselves, the people in their lives, other animals and their environment.
