Cortney Lyn Baca, Babywearing New Mexico’s New Futures Program

Date grant awarded: 2/1/2017

The core team for this project includes Cortney Baca, Sarah Dudley, and Tasman Rompf, all are babywearing consultants, and all volunteer with Babywearing NM to increase accessibility to babywearing in New Mexico, USA. Our partnership at New Futures High School, a specialized public high school in Albuquerque, NM, allows us to visit the student population there, all of whom are young parents of any gender, and introduce babywearing education, access to carriers for any students in financial need, and ongoing support for using the carriers with their children.

Since the program’s beginning in Fall 2016, 110 young parents went through the program, 70 received carriers, and the entire school population is welcomed to ongoing support during their lunch breaks. This program will now be ongoing every semester at this high school and we hope to expand to high schools throughout the state who are committed to helping young parents complete high school while meeting their parenting goals with due respect and dignity.
